چکیده

This research is being funded by a grant from the Engineering Information Foundation, EiF 98-4, and by a grant from the National Science Foundation, EEC-9872498. Magaly Moreno, Mary Besterfield-Sacre, Larry J. Shuman, and Harvey Wolfe, Industrial Engineering/School of Engineering, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA 15261 Cindy J. Atman, Industrial Engineering and CELT, University of Washington, Seattle, WA 98195 Abstract With the establishment of the challenging Engineering Criteria 2000 accreditation guidelines, institutions must obtain a more informed understanding of students’ underlying knowledge, skills, and attitudes as they begin, matriculate, and eventually complete their engineering studies. As engineering educators collect information about how students demonstrate achievement in the “a-k” outcomes, questions arise as to whether differences exist between student groups, specifically gender and ethnicity differences. Such differences may potentially affect a student’s performance and persistence in engineering. Prior research indicates that engineering students’ initial attitudes, along with gender and ethnicity, are linked to first term probation and retention in the freshman year. How they are linked to achievement of the EC-2000 outcomes is still an open question. At the University of Pittsburgh, we are investigating how confidence in the outcomes changes throughout a student’s undergraduate engineering career and how these selfassessed outcomes correlate with other ‘a-k’ outcome metrics. As part of the larger study, this paper will explore the issue of how confidence in the outcomes is influenced by gender and ethnicity factors at the freshman level. Using the Pittsburgh Freshman Engineering Attitude Post-Survey and data from 16 US engineering schools, who took the questionnaire during the 1998-99 academic year, we have found a number of significant and consistent differences in the 11 outcomes with respect to student gender and ethnicity.

Background and aims: The aim of this study was to explore ethnic differences in demographic and socioeconomic determinants of poor physical and mental self-rated health (SRH) in the United States. Methods: We used data from the Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiology Surveys (CPES) 2001- 2003, which included a national household probability sample of 18237 individuals including 520 Vietnamese, 5...

The impact of gender, race, socioeconomic status, and treatment on outcomes in esophageal cancer: A population-based analysis

BACKGROUND African Americans and Hispanics are reported to have higher mortality from esophageal cancer (EC) than Caucasians. In this study, we analyzed the independent effects of race, gender, treatment, and socioeconomic status (SES) on overall survival (OS). METHODS Data for all EC cases between 2004 and 2010 with follow-up through 2012 were obtained from the California Cancer Registry. We...

Contextual Effects of Ethnicity, Gender, and Place on Depression; Case Study of War Related Stress for Kurdish Women

Contextual factors such as ethnicity, gender, place, and their intersections determine the social condition that populations and individuals live in. As a result, environmental stressors that shape exposures, and also resilience and vulnerabilities are specific to the population. This emphasizes the role of the intersection of such contextual factors in studying psychosocial causes of depressio...

Demographic factors in hip fracture incidence and mortality rates in California, 2000-2011.

BACKGROUND Hip fractures result in both health and cost burdens from a public health perspective and have a major impact on the health care system in the USA. The purpose was to examine whether there were systematic differences in hip fracture incidence and 30-, 90-, and 365-day mortality after hip fracture in the California population as a function of age, gender, and race/ethnicity from 2000-...

بررسی وضعیت خودمراقبتی و تفاوتهای جنسیتی در بیماران مبتلا به نارسایی قلبی

Background and Aim: Gender in performing self-care behaviors is a non- modifiable factor. Despite the belief that women are better than men in self-care, there is little evidence to challenge this view. The purpose of this study was to determine the status of self-care behaviors in men and women with heart failure.   Materials and Methods: In this analytical cross-sectional study, 239 patient...
